The papers comprise copies of newspaper cuttings, correspondence, speeches, annual reports and leaflets relating to Valder's term as chairman of the Sydney Stock Exchange. During his time, Valder was an advocate of self-regulation, challenging the Labor government's preference for regulation and control of the security industry. There is also a copy of a speech about his boyhood at Mt Wilson, N.S.W. This was delivered by Valder to the Mt. Wilson Historical Society in 1997.

Stockbroker. John Valder was chairman of the Sydney Stock Exchange from 1973-1976, after which time he did not seek re-election. He was previously a political and financial journalist, entering broking in 1959. In 1967 he established Valder, Elmslie & Co. and was largely instrumental in initiating the N.S.W.
